The number of senior citizens living with their children halved over the last two decades, while those living alone surged, a lawmaker said in her parliamentary audit report on Sunday.

According to Rep. Nam In-soon of New Politics Alliance for Democracy, the number of those aged 65 or older residing with their children dropped to 28.4 percent from 54.7 percent between 1994 and 2014. The number of the elderly living alone surged to 23 percent last year, up by about 10 percentage points.

About 90 percent of the senior citizens living alone also said they receive financial support from their children. About 25 percent of the elderly who live with married children responded that they live together because of financial issues.
