Chungnam Art Museum pursues exchange with National Gallery Singapore as cooperation with domestic and overseas institutions grows
South Chungcheong Province is moving quickly to build an international exchange network with major art institutions in Southeast Asia.
The Chungnam Art Museum Preparation Team held a "2026 Curatorial Capacity-Building Workshop and Business Meeting" at the provincial government's main conference room on Sunday, where participants discussed mid- to long-term international cooperation plans with the National Gallery Singapore.
The event was designed to proactively establish an international cooperation network ahead of the Chungnam Art Museum's opening and to explore potential collaboration with Southeast Asian art institutions in academic exchange, exhibitions and research.
Attendees included Kim Jang-eon, head of the Chungnam Art Museum Preparation Team, and Seng Yu Jin, deputy director of the National Gallery Singapore, along with curators from both sides. Provincial Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau Director Jo Il-gyo also held a separate working meeting with Seng on the sidelines.
Kim and Seng exchanged views on the museum's opening direction, international exchange strategies and the need for solidarity among art institutions across Asia. They agreed to pursue joint research, exhibitions and academic exchange projects in stages, underpinned by a future MOU between the two institutions.
A special lecture titled "Southeast Asian Art and War After the Monsoon" provided the backdrop for discussions covering the National Gallery Singapore's operational model, the history of Southeast Asian art and ecological discourse, and the possibility of comparative research and joint seminars examining South Chungcheong's natural art movement alongside Southeast Asian ecological art practices.
"This workshop marked an important starting point for the Chungnam Art Museum to move beyond a Western-centric perspective and build new art discourse through solidarity with Asia," Kim said. "We will continue to strengthen our international cooperation foundation so that the traditional values of Chungnam art — coexistence with the natural environment — can be expanded within global artistic discourse."
Meanwhile, the Chungnam Art Museum Preparation Team has been steadily broadening its cooperation network with art institutions at home and abroad. It has already signed MOUs with the South Jeolla Province Museum of Art and the North Jeolla Province Museum of Art, and is currently maintaining international exchanges with the Cleveland Museum of Art in the United States, the Nara Prefectural Museum of Art in Japan, and FRAC Grand Large and FRAC Picardie in France.
The Chungnam Art Museum is under construction in the Singyeong-ri area of Hongseong-gun, with a total floor area of 28,396 square meters across two below-ground floors and four above-ground floors. It is on track to open in the second half of 2027.
