Psy referred to prosecutors over non-contact prescription, proxy drug pickup

Singer Psy, 48, whose real name is Park Jae-sang, has been referred to prosecutors on charges of obtaining prescriptions for psychotropic drugs without in-person consultations and having his manager pick them up on his behalf.

According to police, the Seodaemun Police Station in Seoul on Monday forwarded Psy, a professor at a Seoul university hospital, his manager and one other person — four individuals in total — to the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office on charges of violating the Medical Service Act.

Psy is accused of receiving prescriptions for the psychotropic drugs Xanax and Stilnox from a Seoul university hospital without undergoing in-person medical examinations from 2022 through last year, and of having his manager and other third parties collect the medications on his behalf.

The drugs Psy was prescribed treat sleep disorders, anxiety and depression, but carry risks of misuse and abuse. Patients are therefore required in principle to undergo an in-person examination before a prescription can be issued.

Under current medical law, only a doctor who has directly examined a patient may write a prescription, and only that patient may collect it.

Earlier in the police investigation, P Nation, Psy's agency, issued a statement acknowledging that "having a third party collect the prescription sleep medication is a clear mistake and lapse in judgment." The agency said Psy had been diagnosed with chronic sleep disorder and had been taking a prescribed dosage under medical supervision, adding that on some occasions a third party had collected the sleep medication during that process.
