Ministry of Interior and Safety and Seongbuk-gu carry out safety checks at polling and counting stations ahead of local elections
Seoul's Seongbuk-gu district conducted a final inspection of polling and vote-counting sites Tuesday in coordination with the Ministry of Interior and Safety, one day before the 9th nationwide simultaneous local elections.
The inspection was attended by Vice Minister of Interior and Safety Kim Min-jae, along with officials from the ministry, the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Seongbuk-gu and the Seongbuk-gu Election Commission.
The inspection team visited a polling station to be set up at the Anam-dong community center and the vote-counting site at Korea University's Hwajeong Gymnasium, checking facility safety conditions and operational readiness at each location.
Seongbuk-gu will operate 96 polling stations and one vote-counting center for the election. The district has approximately 376,000 registered voters.
Officials reviewed voter flow and guidance systems at each polling station and confirmed that accessibility facilities are in place for people with disabilities and elderly voters. The district also established a coordination framework with relevant agencies to prepare for emergencies such as fires or power outages, and reviewed response procedures.
Seongbuk-gu will operate an election operations center throughout the voting and counting period to handle any incidents or emergencies. The district will also continue to provide the administrative support needed for safe and smooth polling and tallying.
Vice Minister Kim Min-jae urged officials to "spare no effort in safety management and operational readiness at polling and counting sites so that citizens can vote with confidence."
Choi Gyeong-ju, acting district mayor of Seongbuk-gu, said the district would "do its utmost to support the election in close cooperation with relevant agencies, ensuring there are no gaps in polling station operations or safety management."
Voting in the 9th nationwide simultaneous local elections will be held Wednesday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
