US rebuffs Iran's claim of striking 5th Fleet base, says all attacks failed

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it struck major US military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait, but US Central Command immediately rebuffed the assertion, saying Iran's attacks had failed.

The IRGC announced through state media on June 2, local time, that it had struck the US Navy's 5th Fleet base in Bahrain and a US Air Force base in Kuwait using missiles and drones, according to Reuters and AFP.

CENTCOM pushed back almost immediately, posting on X that Iran's assertions of striking the 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and US air bases in the region were "false." "All of Iran's attacks against US forces have failed," it said.

"US forces remain on alert and are prepared to defend against Iran's unprovoked aggression," CENTCOM added.

The US said it had intercepted three missiles fired by Iran that day, working alongside Bahraini forces. Missiles launched toward Kuwait either fell short of their targets or broke apart in flight, CENTCOM added.

CENTCOM also said it shot down three attack drones Iran had fired at civilian vessels lawfully transiting regional waters.

The US also announced it had carried out airstrikes on Iran's Qeshm Island in response to the Iranian attacks.

CENTCOM said the strikes targeted an Iranian military ground control station on Qeshm Island and that there were no US casualties.

Qeshm Island is Iran's largest island, located in the Strait of Hormuz — a critical shipping lane for oil and gas exports from the Gulf region.
