Popular BJ with gang past dies in traffic accident during live stream watched by 150

A well-known internet broadcaster with a former gang background died in a traffic accident while live streaming on a national highway.

According to police Tuesday, a man in his 40s known by the handle BJ was struck by a cargo truck on a national highway in Sangju, North Gyeongsang Province, on Monday while broadcasting a cycling mission from Busan to Seoul. The driver of an SUV traveling with him was also seriously injured and taken to a hospital.

The accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. Monday on National Route 25 near Seongdong-ri in Nakdong-myeon. A 3.5-ton cargo truck traveling from Daegu toward Sangju struck the bicycle ahead of it and then the following SUV in quick succession, police said.

The cyclist, identified only as A, suffered traumatic cardiac arrest and received emergency treatment from paramedics but ultimately died. The SUV driver, identified as B, sustained serious injuries.

A was a popular internet broadcaster known for his past gang ties. At the time of the accident, he was in the middle of a challenge broadcast with fans — a mission to cycle from Busan to Seoul within three days.

A had his mobile phone broadcasting live at the time of the crash, with roughly 150 viewers watching. The stream also showed in real time the prize money he stood to receive upon completing the mission.

Police believe the accident was caused by the cargo truck driver's negligence and are investigating the exact circumstances based on dashcam footage and witness accounts.
