Kim Hyun-gi, former speaker of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, elected 9th-term Gangnam-gu district mayor with 65.89% of the vote
Gangnam-gu has elected its first district mayor to have previously served as speaker of the Seoul Metropolitan Council.
People Power Party candidate Kim Hyun-gi won 192,046 votes, or 65.89%, in Wednesday's local elections, cruising to the landslide victory widely anticipated.
Kim served four terms as a Seoul Metropolitan Council member representing Gangnam-gu before rising to the council speakership.
His record of contributions to improving education in Gangnam-gu helped him win the People Power Party primary and carry that momentum through to the general election.
Kim is widely regarded as a principled and incorruptible figure, and observers broadly expect him to take Gangnam-gu to the next level.
