Oh Se-hoon claims victory in Seoul mayoral race, calling win a triumph for 'ordinary citizens'

People Power Party Seoul mayoral candidate Oh Se-hoon, with his victory in the June 3 local elections all but confirmed, said Thursday the result belonged not to him personally but to the city's working people. "I see this as a victory for ordinary, hardworking citizens — those desperate for an end to the hellish jeonse and monthly rent crisis, dual-income couples searching for safe childcare, and residents who have waited in aging homes, holding on to hope for reconstruction," Oh said at his campaign office in Daewang Building in Jongno-gu.

Oh planned to walk back to Seoul City Hall after delivering his victory remarks.

The win makes Oh the first Seoul mayor in history to be elected to a fifth term.

Oh first won the Seoul mayoral race in 2006, at age 45, becoming the youngest directly elected mayor of the capital at the time. He had previously become the first four-term Seoul mayor before adding a fifth on Thursday.

Democratic Party of Korea Seoul mayoral candidate Jeong Won-oh acknowledged defeat Thursday, saying he would "humbly and solemnly accept the choice of the citizens."

Speaking to reporters at his vote-counting situation room in Jung-gu, Jeong said, "I fell short, and everything is my fault. I could not get close enough, and I could not listen deeply enough."
