Seoul's Gangdong-gu district announced Thursday that it operates a monthly "Health Management Class for Hypertension, Diabetes and Dyslipidemia" on an ongoing basis.
The program aims to prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease among residents and strengthen their capacity for self-managed health care. According to the Ministry of Statistics' 2024 cause-of-death statistics, heart disease ranked second among causes of death at 65.7 per 100,000 people, while cerebrovascular disease ranked fourth at 48.2 per 100,000. Experts say cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions are largely caused by preceding chronic illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes, and that early-stage cases often present no symptoms — making chronic disease prevention especially important.
The health management class, run by the Gangdong-gu Public Health Center, has this year expanded its hands-on curriculum to include practical skills residents can use in daily life.
