A Navy petty officer died Friday after being found unconscious with a head wound aboard a warship conducting a combat readiness drill in waters near Yeonpyeong Island in the Yellow Sea, the Navy said. The sailor was discovered at around 1:36 p.m. and given emergency first aid at the scene before a military medical transport helicopter rushed him to the Armed Forces Capital Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:50 p.m.
The Navy expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and said civilian police and military investigators would conduct a joint probe to determine the exact cause of death.
