Support team to visit project sites and offer solutions directly
Jeon Sung-soo, the Seoul district mayor of Seocho-gu who won reelection in the June 3 local elections, signed off Thursday on a plan to establish a district mayor-led "on-site rapid reconstruction support team" as his first official act upon returning to work.
According to Seocho-gu, the on-site rapid reconstruction support team consolidates reconstruction-related permitting and support work that had previously been handled separately across multiple departments, placing it under the direct authority of the district mayor. The team will serve as a direct communication channel, with the district mayor personally visiting project sites among the 79 active reconstruction projects in Seocho-gu where issues or complaints have arisen and proactively offering solutions. Visits are scheduled one to two times per month as a general rule, with frequency adjusted based on residents' requests.
The team's main operating procedure follows four steps: site selection, agenda review, field visit and follow-up management. First, project sites are selected based on emerging issues or resident requests, after which the relevant district office departments and a panel of reconstruction experts closely examine the causes of any delays. The district mayor then leads the on-site rapid reconstruction support team on a direct visit to meet with association executives, contractor and subcontractor representatives, and complaint representatives to work out mediation proposals and solutions. The process concludes with ongoing follow-up monitoring to ensure the project proceeds normally.
In the election, Jeon secured reelection with 66.4 percent of the vote — the highest share among all candidates for Seoul basic local government head positions. Seocho-gu also recorded the highest voter turnout in Seoul at 66.3 percent. Strong resident support for the district's backing of real estate redevelopment and reconstruction projects is seen as a major factor in Jeon's reelection.
"Reconstruction projects incur financing costs every single day — there is not a moment to waste," Jeon said. "The on-site rapid reconstruction support team will go directly to project sites, examine sources of conflict together with association executives, and find solutions."
