Figure skating star Cha Jun-hwan in talks to return to acting after 17 years

Figure skater Cha Jun-hwan is in talks to return to acting for the first time in 17 years.

His agency, Fantagio, said Sunday that Cha is considering an offer to appear in "Palace Land," a new sitcom on tvN.

"Palace Land" follows the daily lives of part-time workers at an amusement park who live together in a dormitory.

Cha worked as a child actor early in his career. He appeared in MBC's special drama "Miracle" in 2006 and played the younger version of Park Ki-woong's character in the 2008 drama series "Every Night." He made a particularly strong impression on audiences in 2009 when he portrayed the young version of Jung Il-woo's character in "Return of Iljimae."

Last year, when asked on a broadcast whether he would consider returning to acting after retiring from skating, Cha said he wanted to give it a try. "I switched careers from child acting, so I feel like there's still so much I haven't done," he said. "If the opportunity comes, I'd like to challenge myself as an actor after I retire."

Cha is one of South Korea's most decorated male figure skaters. At the 2026 Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics earlier this year, he finished fourth — the best Olympic result ever recorded by a South Korean male figure skater. He signed an exclusive contract with Fantagio in April, signaling plans to expand his activities beyond the ice.
