Unlicensed middle schooler crashes car in Gwangju, seriously injuring female passenger

A middle school student driving without a license struck a road curb in Gwangju, seriously injuring a female classmate in the passenger seat.

According to police, the crash occurred around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday when a Spark sedan driven by a middle school student, identified only as A, hit a curb on a street in Gwangcheon-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju.

The impact overturned the vehicle. A female student identified as B, who was in the front passenger seat, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. The driver and three other passengers in the back seat sustained minor injuries.

All five occupants were ninth-graders. The four passengers were all female; A was the only male. Investigators determined the students attended different schools.

The vehicle belonged to the parents of one of the passengers. Police confirmed alcohol was not involved. Just before the crash, police had received a report from a caller saying a friend of their daughter was driving without a license.

Police released A to his guardians, citing his status as a minor and the late hour of the incident. "We plan to schedule a follow-up investigation of A and the others at a later date," a police official said.
