AOA's Jimin opens up about sleepless nights and anxiety ahead of comeback

Singer Jimin, a former member of girl group AOA, has opened up about her emotional state ahead of her new album's release.

On Tuesday, Jimin posted on her Instagram that her new album was just one day away from release and reflected on the difficult month leading up to it. "For about a month, I was a mess," she wrote. "I couldn't explain it here, I couldn't explain it there — I had become the most sensitive person in the world."

She went on to describe the toll the process had taken on her. "I have to keep going on my own from here, but I kept being like this — I was afraid even the friends who help me would grow tired of me," she said. "I can't normally drink, but I had to drink every night just to fall asleep. Medication wasn't working."

Jimin also said she had struggled to see even her small circle of friends. "I don't have many friends to begin with, and lately it's been hard to meet even them," she wrote, and went on to say, "I was so on edge that even when we did meet, things felt unresolved — I'd come home feeling hurt for reasons I couldn't quite explain."

She said she finished the music video on Monday and finally felt a sense of relief. "I don't know how much I cried for 20 minutes after submitting it for review — my face was completely black, my hair had turned completely white," she wrote. She added that her lips were chapped and she had bitten her hands so badly she could barely shampoo her hair.

Jimin also spoke about the pressure of working alone. "Doing it all by myself was overwhelming. There was so much to take care of, and my heart was worn out," she said.

She also expressed doubt about whether her work would be well received. "What does it matter if the song is good, what does it matter if the music video is good, what does it matter if the jacket is good — so many people say they dislike me," she wrote.

She added that even her closest friend had been receiving malicious comments simply for being associated with her. "It feels less like I'm helping and more like I'm holding back someone I care about," she said.

Despite her struggles, Jimin expressed gratitude to those who have stood by her. "To my friends who have stayed firmly by my side — thank you," she wrote. "Thank you so much for helping and supporting this wild and unpredictable Jimin."

She closed the post with a personal message. "I don't wish for great love, and I don't dare imagine it," she wrote, and added, "I just want to be someone my friends who believed in me, my fans, and my family can be proud of. That is my honest heart."

Jimin made her debut as an AOA member in 2012 and left the group in 2020, going on hiatus. She returned to the spotlight in 2022 when she appeared on the JTBC music competition program "The Second World." Her new album is set for release Wednesday.
