PPP lawmaker reverses course, accepts orchid sent by President Lee

People Power Party Rep. Kim Tae-gyu, who won the by-election in Ulsan's Nam-gu Gap constituency, reversed his position within a day after initially saying he would not accept a congratulatory orchid sent in the name of President Lee Jae Myung.

Kim wrote on Facebook Wednesday that "the orchid has done nothing wrong," adding that his aide had brought it inside, saying he would still take good care of it.

Kim said he named the plant "Myeong-nan" — a play on "myeongnan," the Korean word for pollock roe — and pledged to raise it well. He said the name was meant to wish it a bright future.

In a photo Kim posted alongside the message, a printed note reading "Myeong-nan! Live righteously" was attached below the pot, which bore the inscription: "Congratulations on your election to the National Assembly. President Lee Jae Myung."

Earlier, Kim had posted on Facebook on Tuesday that a congratulatory potted plant had arrived from the president and that he had left it outside his office door. He included a photo of the orchid sitting in a corner outside the office.

Kim said citizens were filling the streets in Songpa at that moment, and that before observing formalities like sending flowers, the president owed the public answers — on how such a situation had come to pass and who should be held accountable. He said he was "politely declining the congratulations in light of the gravity of the current situation."

Meanwhile, Cheong Wa Dae delivered congratulatory orchids to the 14 newly elected lawmakers who entered the National Assembly following the June 3 by-elections. The recipients included nine members of the Democratic Party of Korea, four from the People Power Party and one independent.
