A man in his 30s who bought and used methamphetamine through Telegram has been arrested after his father reported him to police.
The Gwangju Seobu Police Station said Wednesday it had detained a man identified only as A on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act.
A is accused of using methamphetamine at a motel in Hwanggeum-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju, at around noon on Feb. 9.
The investigation found that A had bought 0.2 grams of methamphetamine through Telegram for personal use before committing the offense.
Police arrested A after his father called to report that his son was "rambling and appeared to have taken drugs." A field drug test administered on the spot came back positive for narcotics.
Because both A and his father reside in Seo-gu, the Seobu station had jurisdiction and handled the investigation.
Police applied for an arrest warrant, citing A's prior convictions for similar offenses and the seriousness of the case. The court granted the warrant Tuesday.
Under South Korea's Narcotics Control Act, using methamphetamine even once is classified as a serious crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to 100 million won (about $65,900). First-time offenders can still receive a prison sentence, and repeat or habitual users face enhanced penalties.
