Geumcheon-gu brings hands-on safety education to residents' doorsteps

Seoul's Geumcheon-gu district announced it will run a mobile hands-on safety education program, bringing instructors directly to community facilities across the district.

The program runs in two rounds — May through June in the first half of the year and October through November in the second half. Educators will visit daycare centers, kindergartens, elementary schools, child welfare facilities, community centers, day-care centers for people with disabilities, and vocational facilities to deliver tailored safety instruction.

The curriculum covers five areas: everyday lifestyle safety, traffic safety, disaster preparedness, crime prevention, and health safety. Alongside classroom instruction, participants take part in hands-on drills including fire extinguisher use, fire evacuation procedures, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The program also addresses how to respond to missing-person situations and attempted abductions.

This year, the district is adding a new session for senior residents focused on preventing voice phishing scams.

Children will also receive anti-school-violence education, while seniors will be offered sessions on avoiding multi-level marketing fraud.

Last year, the district ran the program at 124 sites. A satisfaction survey of participants gave the program a score of 98 out of 100. Since last year, the district has expanded the curriculum to include smartphone and cyber addiction awareness, guidance on locating civil defense shelters and emergency procedures, and elevator safety.

"We will continue to provide hands-on safety education tailored to the needs of disaster-vulnerable groups, so that residents can recognize the importance of safety and put safety practices into action in their daily lives," Geumcheon-gu Mayor Yoo Sung-hoon said.

Meanwhile, Geumcheon-gu has allocated 3.674 billion won (about $2.42 million) of its 2026 budget to public order and safety.
