Jang Dong-hyeok signals defiance as resignation calls mount within PPP

People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok, facing pressure from within the party to step down following the June 3 local elections, signaled his intent to push through the crisis by posting polling data and a pointed message on social media.

On Friday, Jang shared survey results related to the local election outcome on his Facebook page, accompanied by the caption: "Jang Dong-hyeok engaging in self-delusion? Their mental defeat!"

The poll showed that 40.2 percent of respondents said the People Power Party had performed better in the June 3 local elections, compared with 35.7 percent who said the Democratic Party of Korea had done so, in response to the question of which party had fared better.

He also posted findings from a separate survey targeting PPP supporters dissatisfied with the election results, which showed that 59.4 percent of those respondents did not agree that party leadership bore responsibility for the outcome.

The calls for his resignation have grown louder in recent days. At a supreme council meeting Thursday, PPP youth council member U Jae-jun publicly proposed a full leadership resignation and urged Jang to make a decision. That same day, 25 lawmakers belonging to "Alternative and Future," a group of first- and second-term Assembly members, held a press conference at the National Assembly demanding Jang step down.

Political observers see little chance the resignation demands will succeed, primarily because Jang has shown no willingness to leave. At Thursday's supreme council meeting, he said addressing the ballot shortage controversy that arose during the local elections should take priority. In recent days, he has repeatedly emphasized the need for a by-election and the introduction of a special prosecutor, pushing election administration issues to the center of the party's agenda.
