Hanmi Semiconductor, the world's leading maker of TC bonders — a key piece of equipment in HBM manufacturing — announced Friday it would make a 50 billion won ($32.7 million) strategic investment in SpaceX, sending its shares sharply higher as the Kospi reclaimed the 8,100 level with a nearly 5 percent surge on the day.
Hanmi Semiconductor closed at 361,000 won on the main bourse Friday, up 24.95 percent from the previous session, according to Korea Exchange.
The stock had tumbled earlier this year after the company posted an earnings shock in the first quarter, but the SpaceX investment disclosure triggered a sharp rebound.
Hanmi Semiconductor disclosed Friday that it plans to acquire SpaceX shares worth 50 billion won, equivalent to 7.24 percent of its equity capital.
The company said the investment reflects a bet on SpaceX's growth potential and also serves as a preemptive move tied to Elon Musk's massive semiconductor production project known as Terafab.
Musk plans to build a giant Terafab facility in Austin, Texas, investing a total of $119 billion (177 trillion won) to manufacture AI chips in-house for use across SpaceX, Tesla, xAI and other ventures.
Hanmi Semiconductor said it believes the Terafab project, once fully under way, could open a new market combining AI semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace and data center infrastructure.
The company characterized the SpaceX investment as a preemptive strategic move into future growth industries rather than a short-term financial play.
"We decided to invest in SpaceX — a co-principal in Elon Musk's Terafab project — in line with the trend of AI industry expansion beyond semiconductors and data centers into aerospace, satellite communications and data services," a Hanmi Semiconductor official said. "We plan to reinvest the expected returns into our core semiconductor equipment business to pursue the company's sustainable growth."
