Tourist jumps into rapids near Iguazu Falls to retrieve lost phone, sparking controversy

A tourist at Iguazu Falls, one of Brazil's most celebrated natural attractions, sparked controversy after climbing over a safety railing and jumping into fast-moving rapids in search of a lost cellphone.

According to the New York Post and other foreign media, the tourist crossed a safety fence at a viewing platform and plunged into churning waters just meters from the edge of a 60-meter drop.

The tourist searched a stretch of water dangerously close to where the falls plunge but made their way back to the viewing platform unassisted.

The waters surrounding Iguazu Falls are far more treacherous than they appear. The sheer volume of flow makes it nearly impossible to gauge the current's strength by sight, and the riverbed's structure combined with the rapid flow creates whirlpools that can sweep even an adult off their feet in an instant.

Park authorities detained the tourist and immediately expelled them from the park, warning of a safety regulation violation. Officials urged visitors not to enter the water if a personal item falls in, and to contact park rescue personnel instead to determine whether retrieval is possible.

Crossing safety railings at Iguazu Falls is strictly prohibited, yet tourists continue to venture into restricted zones — whether to take photos or recover belongings.

In 2011, two American tourists died in a boat accident at the falls. In 2024, several influencers were killed when a boat capsized after they refused to wear life jackets.
