Lee Jung-hoo goes hitless, ending 18-game hitting streak

Did a day of rest break the spell? Lee Jung-hoo's consecutive-game hitting streak has come to an end.

Lee, 27, of the San Francisco Giants went 0-for-3 Friday in a home game against the Chicago Cubs at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

The result snapped his hitting streak at 18 games, which had begun May 15 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

His season batting average slipped slightly from .338 to .333, on 79 hits in 237 at-bats.

Starting in right field and batting fifth as usual, Lee led off the bottom of the second in a scoreless game and grounded out to first base against Cubs starter Javier Assad.

With San Francisco trailing 0-2 and two outs and a runner on third in the bottom of the fourth, Lee hit a sharp grounder but was thrown out at second base.

In his third plate appearance, with one out in the bottom of the seventh against Cubs left-handed sidearmer Hoby Milner, Lee flied out to right field.

San Francisco managed just four hits on the day. The Giants mounted a late charge when Bryce Eldridge hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, but Rafael Devers — batting directly ahead of Lee — struck out looking to end the inning, and San Francisco lost 1-5.

Lee had played in 13 consecutive games without a day off since May 30. After a rare rest day Friday, his timing appeared off and the streak came to an end.

Kim Ha-seong, 30, of the Atlanta Braves returned to action for the first time in six days but also failed to record a hit, going 0-for-2 with a walk as the starting shortstop batting eighth in a road game against the New York Mets.

His season batting average fell further to .093, on 5 hits in 54 at-bats.

In his first at-bat in the top of the second with the game tied 2-2, no outs and runners on first and third, Kim worked a patient walk off Mets starter Nolan McLean to load the bases.

Atlanta could not capitalize, however, as the next three batters went down on a strikeout, an infield pop-up and another strikeout.

With Atlanta trailing 2-6 and one out and a runner on first in the top of the fourth, Kim battled through nine pitches and fouled off three before grounding out to third base.

He led off the top of the seventh and again grounded out to third.

With Atlanta having cut the deficit to 5-7 and two outs with runners on first and third in the top of the eighth, Kim was lifted for pinch hitter Rowdy Tellez, who flied out to left field to strand the runners. Atlanta lost for the third consecutive game.

Song Seong-mun, 29, of the San Diego Padres did not appear in San Diego's road game against the Baltimore Orioles, remaining on the bench as the Padres lost 3-7.
