Na Kyung-won says Oh Se-hoon would win by landslide in by-election, calls for probe into June 3 vote

People Power Party lawmaker Na Kyung-won said Saturday that Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon would win by a landslide if a by-election were held.

In a Facebook post Saturday, Na said that if a "fair and transparent election free of any irregularity or fraud" were conducted, Oh would be able to reaffirm his legitimacy "with far greater support and a decisive victory than he has now."

Na pushed back against claims that Oh could not run again if he resigned and called a by-election due to term limits on local government heads. "This is a clear misreading of the law," she said. She argued that the three-term limit for local government chiefs is based on the number of terms actually served in office, not the number of times a candidate has been elected. She said it was reasonable to interpret the rules as allowing Oh to run in a by-election even if he resigned before his new term begins July 1, since that term would not count as having been served.

Na drew a line against speculation that her remarks at a press conference June 12 — in which she said she would have called a by-election had she been the Seoul mayor-elect — were motivated by personal ambition. "There is a lot of chatter saying Na Kyung-won wants to run herself," she said. "This is nothing but a low-grade attack not even worth responding to."

She said the more pressing issue was not the by-election itself but how to address what she called the "worst electoral disaster" of the June 3 vote, referring to the ballot shortage during the election. "The core of any resolution lies in a thorough investigation into the truth and in holding the right people properly accountable," she said.
