Oh Hyun-gyu's winner vs. Czech Republic draws 1-star review attacks on parents' restaurant

A restaurant run by the parents of Oh Hyun-gyu — the South Korean forward who scored the go-ahead goal in the team's 2026 World Cup Group A win over the Czech Republic — has been flooded with malicious one-star reviews, drawing widespread public outrage.

Screenshots of the reviews began circulating Sunday across online communities including Bobaedream and DC Inside under titles such as "Comments on World Cup player Oh Hyun-gyu's parents' restaurant."

In one review, a user gave the restaurant a single star and wrote that they had "lost all the money" they had bet on the Czech Republic to win.

The same user went on to mock the team, writing, "You're going to be eliminated from the group stage anyway. Try hard, I guess," and adding, "Mexico will beat you easily anyway."

The reviewer also asked why people who had never eaten the restaurant's loach soup were leaving reviews at all.

Other users condemned the posts, with comments including "It's a shame we share the same nationality," "Why drag his family into this?" "You've crossed a line," and "Isn't this basically business interference?"

Oh came on as a substitute in the second half of Friday's match against the Czech Republic at Guadalajara Stadium in Mexico and scored the go-ahead goal 35 minutes after entering the pitch to seal the victory.

After the match, attention turned to his parents' franchise loach soup restaurant in Hopyeong-dong, Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province.

The restaurant had posted a notice saying it would be closed from June 8 through June 30 to cheer on the South Korean national team at the World Cup.

"Our son is competing as a national team player in this World Cup, and we want to be there in person to support and encourage him as a family," the notice read. "We are sincerely grateful to all the customers who visit and support us, and we ask for your continued support for the national team and our son."

Oh told a media outlet in March that he grew up eating rice in loach soup at an age when other children were still on baby food.
