Yangcheon-gu Installs IoT Smart Lighting Across 12 Parks for Safer, Smarter Management

Yangcheon-gu is rolling out a "Smart Safety Park Light" project that integrates advanced information and communications technology into neighborhood parks to strengthen public safety and improve management efficiency, the district said. The project is led by District Mayor Lee Gi-jae.

The Smart Safety Park Light system uses a short-range wireless network to attach IoT (Internet of Things) two-way switching devices to park lights, enabling administrators to remotely control on/off functions and brightness levels. Managers can monitor the status of each light in real time from a computer or smartphone and respond quickly when a malfunction occurs. The system also supports precise location tracking of emergency callers, helping ensure resident safety.

The district plans to convert all park lights in the area to the Smart Safety Park Light system by 2027, building a management framework that reduces safety blind spots within parks while also cutting energy consumption.

The project has been under way since 2021, and two-way switching devices had been installed on a total of 2,334 park lights through last year. The district plans to install an additional 1,266 devices by the end of this month, reaching its target of completing 80 percent of the total rollout.

This year, the district shifted from replacing entire light poles to simply attaching IoT two-way switching devices to existing poles and distribution panels, cutting costs to roughly one-third of previous levels. The number of parks covered annually also expanded dramatically, from two to 12, significantly boosting the project's overall impact.

This year's target sites are four mountain parks — Yongwangsan Park, Gyenam Park, Onsu Park and Galsan Park — and eight urban parks: Gyenam 2 Park, Mokma Park, Neomeudeul Park, Yangji Park, Osolgil Park, Hanul Park, Dokseo Park and Sinwol Park.

At the four larger mountain parks, two-way switching devices will be installed in distribution panels to convert a total of 1,050 lights to the smart system, improving management efficiency. The eight urban parks will receive 216 dimming-control LED park lights compatible with Bluetooth-based IoT beacon switching devices, enabling remote control and integration with the Ansimi app to strengthen the safety network.

Park lights linked to the Ansimi app are designed so that shaking a nearby smartphone or pressing the in-app emergency button immediately dispatches police. When a report is made, the lights automatically brighten or flash continuously to help responders quickly pinpoint the caller's location.

"By expanding Smart Safety Park Lights using cutting-edge technology, we will strengthen the lifestyle safety network and improve management efficiency, creating an environment where residents can enjoy parks more safely and comfortably," District Mayor Lee said.
