Sinchon's Yonsei-ro Comes Alive With French Street Music Festival

Seodaemun-gu (district mayor Lee Sung-heon) will host the 2026 French Street Music Festival "Fête de la Musique" on Saturday along Yonsei-ro in Sinchon, running from noon to 8 p.m.

In France, the festival has been held every year since 1982 on the summer solstice, with musicians performing across the country in a wide range of genres — free of charge and open to all. The tradition has since spread to more than 120 countries worldwide, with events like the Sinchon gathering held in the same spirit.

Seodaemun-gu has hosted the festival since 2017 to promote cultural exchange between South Korea and France, co-organizing it with the French Embassy in Korea. This year carries added significance as it marks the 140th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, established in 1886.

The main stage program on Saturday begins at 5 p.m. with opening performances by K-pop dance crew Shining and fusion traditional music band EiDOS.

The headline show follows at 6:30 p.m. and runs for about an hour, featuring French jazz singer Amy Gadiaga and rock band La Flemme. Admission is free to anyone who comes to Sinchon during that time.

Beyond the performances, food booths, a flea market and hands-on experience booths will operate throughout the day from noon to 8 p.m.

Visitors can pick up French gourmet sausages, home-style steak and traditional pie, gelato and crepes. French-inspired craft items will also be on sale, and attendees can try making them on site.

"We expect this festival to deepen the sense of friendship between our two countries and bring happiness to many residents as Sinchon transforms into a street steeped in French culture," Seodaemun-gu District Mayor Lee Sung-heon said.

Yonsei-ro will be closed to vehicle traffic from 6 a.m. to midnight on the day of the festival.
