Singer Hong Ju broke down in tears as she publicly revealed she is battling ovarian cancer.
Hong Ju and her husband Baek Seung-il, a singer and former ssireum wrestler, appeared together on KBS 1TV's "Achim Madang," which aired Monday.
Hong Ju disclosed that she is currently undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer, saying she was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer in March. "There are six rounds of chemotherapy in total — it is called standard chemotherapy, but it is very harsh. I have completed three rounds so far," she said.
She also opened up about her fear ahead of surgery. "Before the operation, I thought things like this only happened in drama series. I could not believe it was happening to me. I was so scared," she said, shedding tears as she recalled the experience.
Baek Seung-il said it had been a long time since he last appeared on "Achim Madang." "My wife has been ill and things have been hectic, but being on 'Achim Madang' gives me strength," he said.
Baek Seung-il said he has taken over child care and all household chores while Hong Ju undergoes chemotherapy. Asked whether ssireum wrestling or housework was harder, he said housework was.
"No matter how much housework you do, it never shows. Homemakers across Korea are remarkable. I even developed housework-related eczema," he added.
