The West Pyeongtaek Alliance, a private civic organization formed to improve transportation, industrial and lifestyle infrastructure in the western Pyeongtaek area, has officially launched.
The alliance said it was established in June and plans to pursue a range of activities aimed at regional development.
The group said it views western Pyeongtaek — an area where industrial complex expansion and various development projects are underway — as facing multiple challenges, including improving transportation access, expanding lifestyle infrastructure and revitalizing local commerce. It said the organization was formed to gather input from a broad membership of residents, business owners, small merchants, workers, landowners, building owners and representatives of tenant companies, and to build a cooperative framework for addressing local issues.
Since its launch, the alliance has identified key priorities including raising the area's overall value, revitalizing local commerce, improving transportation infrastructure and promoting cultural activity.
On transportation, the alliance has held talks with Pyeongtaek city officials on establishing a new metropolitan bus route connecting western Pyeongtaek with Seoul's Gangnam area, and conveyed the need for improved transit access.
On the industrial front, the alliance met with officials overseeing the Pyeongtaek Urban Corporation's automotive cluster project to share updates on its progress and offer recommendations for strengthening western Pyeongtaek's industrial competitiveness.
On the cultural front, the alliance is in discussions with Pyeongtaek city on hosting cultural events in the area. On Friday, it plans to visit Pyeongtaek City Hall to meet with officials responsible for cultural programming and discuss options for holding events in the second half of the year, as well as sustainable operating models.
Alongside this, the alliance conducted an environmental cleanup around the international passenger terminal at Pyeongtaek-Dangjin Port. The group said the effort was intended to provide a pleasant environment for domestic and foreign visitors and improve the area's image.
"We will lay the groundwork for community members to participate and collaborate, contributing to the sustainable development of western Pyeongtaek," Kim Jae-ho, the alliance's representative, said. "We plan to continue activities for regional development across a range of areas, including transportation, industry and culture."
Meanwhile, the West Pyeongtaek Alliance said it will continue to gather community input on local issues, carry out social contribution activities and pursue projects to revitalize the region.
