Man in his 20s gets suspended sentence for throwing puppy from 15th floor over friend's tardiness

A man in his 20s who threw a friend's puppy out of an apartment window to its death because the friend was running late has received a suspended prison sentence.

Judge Kim Ju-hyeon of the Chungju Branch of Cheongju District Court sentenced the defendant, identified only as A, to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, on charges of violating the Animal Protection Act.

A was indicted after throwing a two-month-old puppy out of a 15th-floor emergency stairwell window at an apartment in Eumseong-gun, North Chungcheong Province, at around 5 p.m. on Sept. 8 last year. The puppy died on impact.

A carried out the act because the puppy's owner, a younger acquaintance identified as B, was late for an appointment with him.

"The method of the crime was cruel and the consequences severe, making the defendant highly culpable," Judge Kim said in the ruling. "However, the sentence takes into account that the defendant has shown remorse and reached a settlement with the dog's owner."
