Incident occurred in a female immigration officers' rest room on the second floor of Terminal 1's arrivals hall
A Chinese man broke into a restricted female staff lounge at Incheon International Airport and defecated inside, drawing complaints from immigration workers. Closed-circuit television footage identified the intruder as a Chinese male passenger.
According to the Incheon Airport Immigration and Foreign Nationals Office under the Ministry of Justice, a Chinese male passenger is believed to have entered the women's rest room used by female immigration officers on the second floor of Terminal 1's arrivals hall and defecated in the washroom late on June 4. The incident was discovered the following day.
CCTV footage from the arrivals hall reviewed by the immigration office indicated that the man was a Chinese tourist arriving at the airport.
The female officers' lounge on the second floor of the arrivals hall is a restricted security zone off-limits to the general public and arriving passengers alike.
After the incident, immigration authorities installed a no-entry sign and a fence in front of the women's lounge and notified staff within the office.
Some immigration employees complained that officials had failed to take more assertive action, such as filing a criminal complaint against the man. They are also calling for more fundamental measures to prevent unauthorized entry into the female staff lounge.
"The arrivals hall where the incident occurred is an area where an unspecified number of people, including arriving passengers, can pass through, so it is highly likely that a tourist who urgently needed to use the restroom simply went the wrong way," an official at the Incheon Airport Immigration and Foreign Nationals Office said. "We have not yet identified the specific individual, and we will consider referring the matter to investigators, taking into account the seriousness of the case," the official added.
