Woman, 21, dies after bungee jump staff push her off 40-meter bridge without safety cord

A 21-year-old woman died in Brazil after bungee jump staff pushed her off a 40-meter-high bridge without attaching her safety cord, in what authorities are treating as a fatal act of negligence.

According to CNN and other international media, the incident occurred June 13 local time in Limeira, São Paulo, when staff threw the woman from a height of 130 feet (about 40 meters) without connecting her bungee cord.

Video footage captured at the scene shows the woman being led to the edge of a bridge locally known as "Skull Bridge" — not a regular bungee jumping site — before staff pushed her off. The safety cord was not attached.

Bystanders can be heard shouting "Rope! Rope!" in the footage, but she had already fallen without the cord connected to her harness. Those nearby immediately began CPR, and rescue teams and fire department units rushed to the scene, but she was pronounced dead at the site.

Adding to the shock, she had posted a joking message on social media just before the jump, writing: "Who on earth let me jump off a bridge?"

Six people were arrested in connection with the incident, including three staff members who were present at the scene.

According to police, two suspects attempted to flee and were apprehended in a densely wooded area after a helicopter pursuit.

The bridge, known as Ponte do Esqueleto — Portuguese for "Skull Bridge" — had been used as an extreme sports venue. Local media said it had long been the subject of controversy over safety management and access control.
