Lawmaker visits Hanam Police Station, meets chief Oh Ji-hyeong
Lee Gwang-jae, a Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker representing Hanam-gap in Gyeonggi Province, visited Hanam Police Station on Monday and held a meeting with Chief Oh Ji-hyeong and senior officers to review the city's overall public safety challenges.
"As Hanam grows, strengthening public security is an equally urgent priority," Lee said at the meeting. "I will back the necessary personnel and budget in the National Assembly — not as a routine request, but as a data-driven case with clear justification."
He also said new towns generate new demand for policing as their populations grow, and that allocation formulas based solely on existing statistics fall short. "Standards must be established that separately account for the new demand created by new towns," he said. "We need to raise Hanam's public safety foundation before residents move into the Gyosan new town."
Lee said he would work to persuade relevant agencies of the need to expand personnel — including establishing a new Gami police substation — using objective indicators such as population figures and 112 emergency call data.
The lawmaker also expressed strong support for improving safety on school commute routes. The meeting covered measures to secure drop-off and pick-up zones near schools, prevent accidents involving right-turning vehicles, and expand smart traffic infrastructure in school zones.
"Other cities are already running policies to improve commute safety using smart streetlights and other solutions," Lee said. "I will work to bring those same policies to Hanam." Kang Seong-sam and Oh Min-yong, both newly elected Gyeonggi Province council members, attended the meeting.
Before the meeting, Lee visited a school commute traffic safety campaign held in front of Sinpyeong Elementary School by the Hanam Green Mothers' Association and encouraged its members.
"I am grateful for the Green Mothers' dedication — taking to the streets every day to keep children safe on their way to school," he said. "I will make sure the voices from the field are reflected in traffic safety policy near schools."
