A 28-year-old man who beat a fellow bar patron to death has been sentenced to six years in prison.
The victim, raised by a single mother, donated his organs before he died.
The 12th Criminal Division of the Gwangju District Court, presided over by Chief Judge Jang Woo-seok, sentenced A, 28, to six years in prison on Friday on charges of assault resulting in death. A had been indicted while in detention.
A was indicted on charges of beating B, 30, a patron at a bar in Gwangju on Jan. 18, causing his death.
A lured B outside the bar by challenging him to a "yacha" fight — street slang for bare-knuckle combat — then assaulted the smaller man.
B, who had been drinking and was unable to put up much resistance, collapsed and was declared brain-dead 20 days later from a cerebral hemorrhage.
In keeping with a wish he had expressed on multiple occasions, B donated his heart, lungs, liver, both kidneys and both eyes, giving seven patients a second chance at life.
