South Korea wins AVC Cup with perfect 7-0 record, sweeping Taiwan in final

South Korea's women's volleyball team won the Asian Volleyball Confederation Cup with a perfect 7-0 record.

The national team, led by head coach Cha Sang-hyun, defeated Taiwan 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-22) in the final held Sunday at Candon City Arena in the Philippines.

South Korea had already beaten Taiwan two days earlier in a closely contested group-stage match to decide first place, winning 3-2.

In the first set, Korea trailed in blocking 5-1 but led in attack points 18-11 to seize the momentum.

In the second set, with the score at 18-15, outside hitter Jeong Yun-ju of Heungkuk Life Insurance scored two consecutive points with a powerful left-side attack, while Taiwan committed nine errors and effectively undid itself.

The third set was tightly contested at 19-19. At 23-22, Lee Ye-rim of Hyundai E&C delivered a clean straight-line spike to set up match point, and Jeong sealed the championship by blocking Taiwan's next attack.

South Korea went undefeated across five group-stage matches, the semifinal and the final to claim the title.

However, Asia's top volleyball powers — China, Japan and Thailand — did not participate, as they were competing in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League.

South Korea had failed to retain its VNL spot last year following the retirement of key players including Kim Yeon-koung and Yang Hyo-jin, and its world ranking had slipped to 40th. The team's FIVB world ranking has now climbed back to 31st on the strength of this tournament.
