Khalil Rountree to face Ankalaev in Abu Dhabi

UFC light heavyweight No. 5 Khalil Rountree Jr. (36, United States) will take on No. 1-ranked Magomed Ankalaev (34, Russia) at a UFC event in Abu Dhabi.

The bout headlines "UFC Fight Night: Ankalaev vs. Rountree Jr.," set for July 25 (local time) at Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Rountree Jr. (15-7-1 NC), who has a Korean wife and visits South Korea annually, enters the fight as an underdog against the returning Ankalaev. A former title contender, Rountree drew attention in June last year when he defeated former light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill by unanimous decision at an event in Baku, Azerbaijan — his second consecutive main event victory. A win over Ankalaev would likely put him back in title contention.

Ankalaev (21-1-2) returns to the octagon for the first time since losing the light heavyweight title to Alex Pereira at UFC 320 last October, a defeat that ended his seven-year unbeaten run inside the octagon. Before that loss, Ankalaev had claimed the belt by defeating Pereira at UFC 313, having previously dispatched Anthony Smith, Johnny Walker and Aleksandar Rakic in succession on his path to the title. Now ranked No. 1, Ankalaev is looking for a decisive win in his comeback to put himself back in line for another title shot.

In the co-main event, UFC bantamweight No. 2 Umar Nurmagomedov (30, Russia) meets No. 8 David Martinez (27, Mexico) in a matchup expected to have significant implications for the division.

Umar (20-1) has bounced back from his title fight loss to Merab Dvalishvili by winning back-to-back unanimous decisions — over Mario Bautista in October 2025 and Daveson Figueiredo this past January. Martinez (14-1) enters on a three-fight winning streak, having shown he can finish opponents quickly as well as grind out hard-fought victories over established contenders across three rounds.
