Kyungpook National University celebrates alumni elected in local elections

Kyungpook National University and its alumni association held a congratulatory reception Thursday for alumni elected in the 9th nationwide simultaneous local elections at Hotel Suseong in Daegu.

About 250 people attended, including the newly elected alumni. University President Heo Young-woo and Alumni Association President Chu Gyo-gwan presented commemorative plaques to the elected alumni in celebration of their wins.

More than 110 Kyungpook National University alumni won seats in the 9th nationwide simultaneous local elections and National Assembly by-elections — including one National Assembly member, one metropolitan government head, two education superintendents, nine basic local government heads, 32 metropolitan council members and 66 basic council members.

Lee Jin-suk, who studied English education (class of 1979), won the National Assembly seat for Dalseong-gun in Daegu. Lee Cheol-woo, a mathematics education alumnus (class of 1974), won the North Gyeongsang Province governorship. Kang Eun-hee, a physics education alumna (class of 1983), was elected Daegu education superintendent, and Im Jong-sik, an education department alumnus (class of 1974), won the North Gyeongsang Province education superintendent post.

Nine alumni won mayoral or county chief races among basic local government heads — Cho Jae-gu in Nam-gu, Daegu; and in North Gyeongsang Province, Kim Byeong-sam in Yeongcheon, Kim Hak-hong in Mungyeong, Park Yong-seon in Pohang, Cho Ju-hong in Yeongdeok-gun, Ju Nak-young in Gyeongju, Choi Yu-cheol in Uiseong-gun and Hwang Byeong-jik in Yeongju.

"I hope you will press forward boldly toward a better Republic of Korea," President Heo said. "Your alma mater will always support your efforts and stand by you as your most steadfast partner."
