2009 Jeonju robbery case solved
A man who broke into a shop late at night, raped the female owner and robbed her has been convicted 17 years after the crime.
The Gwangju District Court's Criminal Division 11, presided over by Judge Kim Song-hyeon, sentenced Jeong, 51, to seven years and six months in prison on charges including aggravated robbery and rape, according to legal sources Sunday.
Jeong was indicted on charges of breaking into a store in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, at around 3 a.m. on April 21, 2009, raping the female owner and stealing 300,000 won (about $197) in cash. At the time, he evaded investigators and went on to commit repeated theft offenses before being caught. He received a suspended sentence of one year and six months in prison with a three-year probation, finalized in March 2016.
Investigators later identified Jeong by cross-referencing DNA from the long-unsolved 2009 case against a newly registered database of violent offenders. Prosecutors, who had placed him on a wanted list, tracked down his whereabouts and arrested him in March this year.
During the subsequent trial, Jeong acknowledged all charges against him.
