Marine veteran gets suspended sentence for hazing, groping junior soldier

A Marine Corps veteran in his 20s who was indicted on charges of hazing and sexual assault against junior soldiers during his military service — including setting fire to a subordinate's hand out of boredom — has received a suspended sentence.

The First Criminal Division of the Daegu District Court's Western Branch, presiding judge Do Jeong-won, on Sunday sentenced A, 22, to one year and six months in prison, suspended for three years, on charges of assault and forced indecent conduct against a fellow soldier.

While serving at a Marine Corps unit in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province, last April, A forced a junior soldier on CCTV monitoring duty with him to spray hand sanitizer — a flammable substance — on his own hand, then set it alight with a lighter, saying he was bored.

He also faced charges of repeatedly groping and grabbing a different junior soldier's sensitive body parts in the unit's living quarters. He reportedly said, "This happened to me too, back in the day."

The court said it considered that A had admitted to all of the offenses, expressed remorse, and reached settlements with the victims.
