Baek-ga, a member of K-pop group Koyote, has drawn attention after revealing he earned a substantial profit from investing in Samsung Electronics shares.
Baek-ga appeared on MBN's entertainment program "Sokpuri Show Dongchimi," which aired June 20, and said he stumbled into the investment at a time when he had no interest in the stock market.
"I originally knew nothing about stocks," he said. "About a year ago, I noticed my manager looking at his phone and asked what he was doing — he said he was trading Samsung Electronics shares and that they looked set to rise a bit more. That got me interested."
"My surname is Baek, which sounds like the number 100, so I bought 100 shares — and then basically forgot about them and never checked," he said. "Recently there have been a lot of news articles about the stock, so I opened my account for the first time in a long while and was shocked. Honestly, I'm really happy right now."
Economic commentator Kim Gyeong-pil, who was also on the program, expressed surprise and estimated that Baek-ga's return on the investment was likely around 600 to 700 percent.
Samsung Electronics shares were trading in the range of around 80,000 to 90,000 won (about $59) when Baek-ga made his purchase roughly a year ago.
"The gains were so big it felt amazing," Baek-ga said, adding with a laugh that he almost regretted his surname. "It's a shame my name is Baek — if it were Cheon, which sounds like 1,000, I would have bought 1,000 shares."
He also said the manager who recommended the stock is still working with him. "That's why I'm still holding onto the shares," he said.
Fellow guest No Sa-yeon remarked that Baek-ga had been looking noticeably well lately and said she now understood why, prompting Baek-ga to quip, "I've discovered the taste of capitalism."
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics shares closed at 349,000 won on Thursday.
Securities firms have been raising their target prices for Samsung Electronics in quick succession.
Target prices set by brokerages range from 430,000 to 570,000 won per share, with SK Securities projecting as high as 610,000 won, reflecting broad expectations of further gains.
