Actor Nam Goong-min has shared the behind-the-scenes story of how he gained 17 kilograms for a role.
Nam appeared on JTBC's cooking variety show "Please Take Care of My Refrigerator," which aired Sunday, and revealed his secrets for staying in shape.
When footage of Nam from the MBC drama series "The Veil" was shown, the chef panelists marveled at his physique, with comments including "his back looks like a stingray" and "he reminds me of Kim Dong-hyun or Ma Dong-seok."
"When I act, I tend to build the look first," Nam said. "For the role of a top National Intelligence Service agent, I thought I needed a physique that could overpower someone in a single move — not just someone lean and handsome."
He went on to say that he worked out three hours a day and ate six meals a day, pushing his usual weight of around 67 kilograms up to 84 kilograms. "It's my job, so I didn't even feel how hard it was. I prepared with everything I had," he added.
Nam also opened up about his strict everyday diet. He said he tends to gain weight and bloat more easily than most people, and joked that "the foods that make you look worse are always the tastiest." He drew laughter when he confessed, "Not long ago I ate aralia shoots dipped in gochujang, then had ramyun with rice mixed in — and regretted it afterward."
Even so, he said that for that day at least, he wanted to "eat happily without worrying about gaining weight," drawing more laughs.
Meanwhile, Nam married model and actor Jin A-reum, 11 years his junior, in 2022 after publicly dating. The couple recently announced they are expecting a child, drawing widespread congratulations.
