Father drives drunk with children, 8 and 6, in car — crosses center line, hits taxi and sedan

A man in his 30s has been booked by police after causing a traffic accident while driving drunk with his two young children in the vehicle.

The Daejeon Seo Police Station said Monday it had booked the man, identified only as A, on charges of causing injury under the Special Act on Traffic Accident Processing and drunk driving under the Road Traffic Act, and is currently investigating the case.

A is accused of running a red light and crossing the center line at a five-way intersection in Byeon-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, at around 8:20 p.m. Sunday, striking a sedan and a taxi in succession as they made right turns from the opposite lane.

Five people were injured in the crash and taken to hospital, including the sedan driver, who is in his 70s, and the taxi driver, who is in his 50s.

Investigators found that A had his 8- and 6-year-old children in the car at the time and that his blood alcohol level exceeded the threshold for license revocation. A and his two children were not seriously hurt.

Police completed a preliminary investigation at the scene before allowing A to return home. They plan to summon him again soon to question him about the circumstances of his drinking and the details of the accident.

"We plan to conduct a formal summons interview with A to establish the exact cause of the accident," a police official said.
