Kim Boo-kyum vows to 'think together' on Daegu's path forward

Former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum, who ran as the Democratic Party of Korea's candidate for Daegu mayor in the June 3 local elections but lost, has expressed gratitude to residents and pledged to "think together about the path forward for Daegu" — a statement drawing attention to his next political moves.

Kim sent a text message to residents on Sunday reflecting on the weeks since the vote. "After the election ended, I did nothing but rest," he wrote, adding that he had "done a great deal of thinking as my strength gradually returned."

He recalled the faces of supporters who had encouraged him during the campaign. "The first thing that came to mind was the countless residents who cheered me on," he wrote. "The smiling expressions, the warm gazes, the hands that gripped mine tightly — the energy passed to me through the arms that embraced me."

"Without that energy, how could I have pushed through two months of grueling days from dawn to late at night at this age?" he added. "Thank you. And I am sorry."

Kim attached particular meaning to the votes he received in the election.

"I know how much each of you agonized before casting a vote for me," he wrote. "The number 586,927 is not simply the tally of votes I received. Each single vote carries the resolve of one individual."

"It holds the life each person has lived and the life each person has yet to live," he added. "I know that all too well."

Kim also expressed concern about conditions in the region.

"Daegu is not in an easy place right now," he wrote. "Ultimately, the hope for Daegu lies with you, its residents. I will calmly think together with you about the path forward for Daegu."

Political circles are paying close attention to the message. During the campaign, Kim repeatedly said that even if he lost, he would remain in Daegu as a resident and play a role in the city's development.

Some in local political circles interpret his reference to "the path forward for Daegu" as a signal tied to future political engagement in the region. Observers note that the statement could indicate he is considering resuming political activity, including a possible run in the next general election.
