Yeongdeungpo-gu launches women's soccer league amid growing interest in the sport

Seoul's Yeongdeungpo-gu announced Tuesday it will hold a women's soccer league to promote women's participation in recreational sports and foster a healthy sports culture in the district.

The league kicked off June 20 and runs through an awards ceremony on Aug. 22 — a five-week schedule held at Yangpyeong Nuri Sports Park. Making its debut this year, the competition features six women's soccer teams affiliated with the Yeongdeungpo-gu Football Association, with roughly 200 recreational players taking part. In line with the growing enthusiasm for women's soccer, the district is also running a women's soccer school at Daelim Stadium twice a week for women aged 55 and under, where beginners can learn the sport under the guidance of professional coaches.

Interest in women's soccer has grown on the back of the popular TV program "Goal-Hitting Girls." The Korea Futsal League (KFL) also announced this year it will hold its inaugural "2026 KFL Women's Futsal League and Women's National Team Reserve Selection Tournament" to build a national team selection system.
