Gaon Cable to supply underground power lines for Gyeonggi Province data center project

Gaon Cable said Tuesday it will supply hundreds of billions of won worth of underground transmission lines for the construction of an 80-megawatt data center in Gyeonggi Province.

The project involves building a power grid to meet the electricity demands of the data center. Gaon Cable will handle both the supply of transmission line materials and installation. The company plans to establish a dual power system securing both primary and backup power sources to enhance supply stability.

As demand for data centers grows amid the spread of AI services, Gaon Cable — the top player in South Korea's medium-voltage cable market — is expanding its data center power grid business. Its US subsidiary LSCUS has secured a long-term bus duct supply contract worth 5 trillion won ($3.26 billion) with global big tech companies. Bus ducts are power devices that deliver large volumes of electricity in a stable manner.

"Data center competitiveness starts with a stable power supply," said Jung Hyun, chief executive of Gaon Cable. "We plan to expand our presence in the data center power infrastructure market, leveraging our capabilities in transmission line supply and installation."
