US President Donald Trump plans to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup final next month and present the trophy to the winning team.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a Fox News interview Tuesday (local time) that he and Trump would watch the final together and hand the trophy to the champions. "We are always working closely together," Infantino added.
The World Cup final is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The tournament is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Trump has not attended any matches since the tournament began. Secretary of State Marco Rubio represented the administration at the season opener between the United States and Paraguay on June 12.
Trump has nonetheless had a notable presence at soccer events. Last year, he attended the FIFA Club World Cup final in New Jersey and presented the trophy to champions Chelsea.
Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 to claim the title. Trump took part in the trophy ceremony, though he was booed by some in the crowd each time his image appeared on the stadium screens.
