Waterfront cultural tourism space along Dorimcheon to be shaped by residents' wishes
Dongjak-gu Mayor-Elect Ryu Sam-young has agreed on the spot to a resident's suggestion and asked the district office to explore installing a musical fountain along Dorimcheon as part of a broader waterfront development plan.
Dongjak-gu announced Tuesday morning along the Dorimcheon riverbank its implementation plan for the "Dorimcheon Waterfront Cultural Tourism Space" project — a campaign pledge Ryu made during the 9th nationwide local elections.
The project aims to transform Dorimcheon and the Sindaebang-dong area into a tourism destination by operating a digital media facade and outdoor cafes along the waterway.
During the announcement, a Sindaebang-dong resident who had come to the scene proposed installing a musical fountain as part of the project.
Ryu responded positively, walking the Dorimcheon area with residents and exchanging ideas to flesh out the fountain proposal. He then formally asked Dongjak-gu to review it as part of the project.
Some say the move reflects Ryu's political conviction of governing "the way residents want."
The Sindaebang-dong resident who had put forward the musical fountain idea praised the response. "Listening to residents on the ground and actively reviewing their ideas — this is what true field administration looks like," the resident said.
Ryu has also said he will conduct thorough public consultations when deciding on public-contribution facilities, ensuring they reflect what the majority of residents want — a philosophy he describes as "democratic administration."
