Kane shrugs off missed sitter after England held to goalless draw with Ghana

England captain Harry Kane said he was satisfied with a point after the Three Lions were held to a goalless draw against Ghana in their second Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, though he could not hide his frustration at a glaring missed chance.

England dominated possession but could not break down Ghana's compact defensive block, settling for a 0-0 draw Wednesday at Boston Stadium in Massachusetts.

The most decisive moment came in the 87th minute. Nico O'Reilly's header struck the post and rebounded into the path of Kane, who was waiting unmarked in front of goal. Kane attempted a half-volley into the empty net but sent the ball ballooning over the bar — a miss that foreign media widely labeled an "obvious sitter."

Speaking to the BBC after the match, Kane said it was a game England could have won comfortably. "Ultimately we didn't give too many chances away, and apart from a couple of their counter-attacks, we controlled things pretty well overall," he said.

On his own costly miss, Kane said he had been waiting for exactly that kind of opportunity. "It was one of those games where as a striker you're waiting for the ball to drop," he said. "It dropped, and at the moment of impact I couldn't get on top of the ball properly."

"I'm confident I'd put that away most of the time, but these things happen," he added. "I've been a striker long enough to know not every shot goes in. You have to accept it."

Kane was more confident when asked about England's group stage outlook. England and Ghana are level on four points each after one win and one draw, and both look well placed to advance. England face Panama in their final group match on Sunday.

"We're still in a good position. Next up is Panama, and in a major tournament you have to treat the group stage and the knockout rounds as separate competitions," Kane said. "I want us to finish the last game with a win and top the group."
