Escaped wolf-dogs still at large 8 days on, sighting reported in Dangjin

Wolf-dogs that escaped from a breeding farm in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, remain at large eight days after their escape, with a new sighting reported in the neighboring city of Dangjin.

According to the South Chungcheong fire department and the cities of Seosan and Dangjin, a caller reported to emergency services at around 6:17 a.m. Wednesday that a dog believed to be a wolf-dog was roaming Sudang-ri, Jeongmi-myeon in Dangjin.

Sudang-ri, where the sighting was reported, borders Yeomi-ri, Unsan-myeon in Seosan — the location of the farm where the wolf-dogs were kept.

Dangjin city sent an emergency text alert Wednesday morning urging nearby residents not to approach the animals if spotted and to call 119 immediately.

The incident began in the early hours of June 16, when 11 of 18 wolf-dogs at a farm in Yeomi-ri, Unsan-myeon, Seosan, broke through a fence and escaped around 2 a.m.

Seosan city set up three capture cages at the scene immediately after confirming the escape and broadcast safety warnings to residents through the village public address system.

Seven of the escaped animals were captured between June 16 and June 19, but the remaining animals evaded the effort and have not been found since.

Of the 11 wolf-dogs that originally escaped, three remain uncaptured: one adult and two puppies about five months old.

No injuries to people or livestock have been reported so far, but residents in the area say they are losing sleep over the presence of the animals, which may still retain wild instincts.

Amid the prolonged search, there was one piece of good news: an adult that had escaped returned to the farm on its own at around 11:30 p.m. Monday.

Seosan city has repositioned its capture cages, continued patrols of the area, and is working with the animals' owner and fire authorities to capture the remaining three.

Wolf-dogs are not classified as dangerous dogs under the Animal Protection Act, but authorities have repeatedly urged the public to avoid approaching them and to call 119 immediately upon any sighting.
