Rep. Kim Gyo-heung of the Democratic Party of Korea, who represents Incheon's Seo-gu A district, met with business owners affected by a factory fire in Wonchang-dong, Seo-gu, to push for emergency measures to support their recovery.
At an emergency meeting held Monday, Kim said he had witnessed the determination of business owners to rebuild even after watching their livelihoods turn to ash in an instant. "There is not a single second to waste in restoring people's lives," he said, "and I will pursue immediate measures that reflect what those on the ground are calling for."
Kim also strongly urged local authorities and administrative agencies to take the lead on what he called four urgent recovery tasks to help the affected businesses resume normal operations as quickly as possible.
The four tasks he outlined are: proactively seeking official recognition of the incident as a "social disaster," drawing up emergency preparedness measures against flooding, providing tax relief including a deferral of local tax assessments, and establishing a dedicated task force at the Seo-gu district office to serve as a one-stop support center.
"A policy that people cannot feel in their daily lives is nothing but empty words," Kim said. "I will stand with these business owners to the end so that hope can be rebuilt from the ashes of despair."
