Five fountain modes, music and lighting combine for a nightly spectacle — daily shows at noon, 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. through October, with waterside terraces and local shopping to keep visitors lingering longer
Gwanak-gu, which drew large crowds last year with its tunnel fountain along Byeolbit-naerin Stream, is bringing a new musical fountain to the area this summer to offer residents and visitors a cool, romantic summer night experience.
The district held an opening ceremony for the musical fountain at the Byeolbit-naerin waterside stage on Wednesday, with District Mayor Park Jun-hee and about 100 residents in attendance to celebrate the new leisure destination.
The Byeolbit-naerin Musical Fountain — installed upstream of Bongnim Bridge (near 1642-7 Sillim-dong) as part of efforts to develop Byeolbit-naerin Stream into a landmark destination — is a straight, in-stream water feature measuring 44 meters in length and 2.8 meters in width. It can produce five different fountain patterns.
Particularly striking is the "high-jet fountain," which shoots water up to 20 meters into the air. Combined with upbeat music and colorful lighting, it promises a dynamic nighttime spectacle.
The musical fountain will run daily through October, with 20-minute shows at noon, 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. The surrounding area features a waterside stage and terrace where visitors can watch the fountain while enjoying busking and other cultural performances. Nearby commercial areas, including Sinwon Market and Byeolbit Sinsa-ri, offer additional dining and shopping options to encourage longer stays.
The district hopes the musical fountain and other "stay-and-enjoy" tourism offerings along Byeolbit-naerin Stream will draw more long-stay visitors and inject new energy into the local economy.
The district has also installed new landscape lighting beneath Sinhwa Bridge (near 808-133 Sillim-dong), a temporary structure built in 2024 for flood prevention along Byeolbit-naerin Stream. The bridge had cast shade over a heavily used walking and cycling path, so the district fitted 174 LED landscape light fixtures to brighten the area, improve the riverside environment and enhance nighttime safety. The lighting operates each day from 30 minutes after sunset until 10 p.m.
"Over the seventh and eighth elected terms, we have focused on building healing infrastructure — from developing Byeolbit-naerin Stream into a landmark to restoring its ecological waterway — to give residents a place to relax and unwind," District Mayor Park said. "We will continue to build a sustainable healing and garden city by connecting Gwanak-gu's natural assets, including Gwanaksan and Byeolbit-naerin Stream, and we will keep developing stay-and-enjoy tourism content so that both residents and visitors have reasons to linger."
