Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, which borders the inter-Korean frontier, held a ceremony Thursday at Sky Convention in Chuncheon to mark the 76th anniversary of the Korean War, honoring the sacrifice and dedication of veterans and reaffirming the values of freedom and peace. Governor-elect Woo Sang-ho attended alongside Korean War veterans from eight cities and counties — Taebaek, Hongcheon, Yeongwol, Pyeongchang, Cheorwon, Hwacheon, Yanggu and Inje.
About 400 people attended, including acting Governor Yeo Jung-hyeop, Assembly member Heo Yeong, the chief of staff of the Second Corps, and heads of provincial and municipal agencies and organizations. Gratitude toward the veterans cut across political lines, gender and generation.
Amid a banner bearing the words "The Republic of Korea, defended by heroes, shines before the world," eight veterans received governor's commendations for their contributions to raising security awareness and promoting a spirit of patriotism among residents.
Active-duty soldiers of the Second Corps, representing the next generation, presented bouquets to the veterans as a gesture of gratitude and respect for their sacrifice and service.
The ceremony featured a commemorative address by Park Yeong-taek, head of the Gangwon chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association; a memorial speech by acting Governor Yeo; and remarks by Governor-elect Woo. Cultural performances followed, including a dance recital by Gangwon National University's Kim Gyeong-hui Dance Company and a concert by the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Traditional Music Orchestra, before the gathering closed with a communal singing of the Korean War anthem.
Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province is working with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans to develop a national memorial plaza in Chuncheon and a national cemetery in Hoengseong, so that those who served the country receive proper recognition. The province is also preparing to establish a quasi-veterans hospital to improve access to medical services and support the health of those eligible for veterans' benefits.
